Harassment / work: a suicide victim

An employee committed suicide four days after requesting the industrial tribunal to see Nancy bullying which he was claiming since 2008 on his workplace, officials said today from his lawyer.

"We had been before the industrial tribunal on February 22, to see the bullying and seek judicial resolution of the employment contract, obviously the exclusive fault of the employer," said employee's lawyer, Mr. Christian Olszowiak.

The man, aged 51, worked in a call center for a sign of frozen products in Ludres (Meurthe-et-Moselle), near Nancy. He complained about the conduct of his supervisor, in office since 2008. Depressed, he was hospitalized in a specialized structure for a year, after two suicide attempts. He committed suicide Saturday during a permission slip for the weekend, leaving a letter in which he believes that his employer "had the better of him," said his lawyer.

"A record of the Labour Inspectorate had found he was the victim of bullying," said Mr. Olszowiak. The Labour Court should render its decision on May 31 If the employee is off work due to his death, his wife and daughter wish to restart the procedure, said their lawyer. A criminal investigation is also underway: open to harassment, Mr. Olszowiak hope it is now moving towards "voluntary violence causing death without intention to kill."
